The Colts have decided to use their franchise tag on free agent punter Pat McAfee.
Last year, the Colts used the franchise tag on defensive end Robert Mathis. This year, they went in a different direction and put the tag on star punter Pat McAfee. McAfee has proven to be one of the better punters in the league, and is extremely valuable on the Colts' special teams. McAfee tied for the most tackles on special teams with 8. On top of all of that, McAfee is a fan favorite and the front office would have definitely heard it from the fans had they let go of McAfee.
The tag for punters is 2.7M, which is very reasonable and extremely cheap (franchise tag wise), which makes the decision to go with McAfee that much easier. McAfee is now guaranteed to be on the team for at least one more year, and I assume now that both sides will immediately try and work on a longterm deal.
The Colts can now worry about all their other free agents. Believe it or not, McAfee was probably the biggest name out of all the free agents. Now, he's off that list.
